Please note that you need a Dolby Digital/DTS processor and amplifier or receiver to enjoy 5.1 surround sound. Select the Audio tab, and change the output to Stream/PCM. RDV-995: Press and hold the "shift" button and press the "choice" button to access the on-screen display.
That said, it's a shame DVD audio bitrates were always locked, VBR encoding would have made things a lot easier in that regard. The digital audio output of your DVD player is not configured to output dts. Especially if they want to include extras on the same disc. 9GB is bugger all to begin with, add in a 1.5mbps audio track and that's chewing up a fair whack of available data.

It would've been nice if dvd could've also used PCM or a more efficient audio container to allow for greater audio fidelity it would've been great to have had full bitrate DTS as the bare minimum standard instead of dolby 5.1 at the very least. It took a little while to really figure things out and so some of those earlier releases don't look or sound so great in retrospect similarly to how many earlier blus aren't the greatest. And also keep in mind that dvd was still a new, developing format in the late 90s. But a lot of people never did go with AC-3 since it was an added cost with an external demodulator. And similarly to how some studios like Shout do now with blu, even later movies filmed in multichannel still got a PCM downmix, which was kind of a gimmick since the discrete channels are then matrixed via prologic type receiver settings. They often sounded fairly similar when properly level matched and sometimes the LD might've been mastered a little less 'hot.' But dvd dolby 2.0 vs LD PCM was often night and day in the LD's favor. In regards to dvd vs ld, dd 5.1 on dvd and AC-3 on LD were often comparable. Now that im older and learning more about physical media and audio im questioning if he mad the right choice(from an audio standpoint) there? I know dolby digital isnt as good as true hd, but was it also worse than hifi vhs or cd/laserdisc audio?

However, any time a dvd only had a stereo option of a movie he wanted he'd call dad and curse out the movie studio saying how now he had to track down a vhs or laserdisc copy cause he didnt want to put up with compressed audio. In fact he quite enjoyed the 5.1 surround sound on late laserdiscs and most dvd movies. Now like I said he had an early Dolby digital surround sound system, so its not like he didnt like dolby.
Uncle was a 90's audiophile had the dolby surround( then prologic/early gen DD by i wanna say 96ish?)įrom what I understood(read was repeatedly told each time uncle wanted to show off when he had the family over) as a kid in the 90's cd's redbook had the best *stereo* audio quality, roughly matched by laserdisc digital audio, and a tad above vhs hifi.
Outdated question I know, but its one left over from childhood i recently remembered.
